The two that I purchased second have given trouble. The two units that I purchased new, the one under discussion and the SuperMate (pic added), have been a pleasure and still do the job several years down the line. I don't want to see my hobby labelled as a cheque book entity, there has to be room for rest of us, the true enthusiasts who build their planes - some build their own chargers!! I have had zero issues with these units in terms of keeping my battery packs healthy and reporting on what they are delivering - no crashes or failures of any kind.

George - your input helped me focus on the problem area, thank you.ĭanie - if a charger that retails locally locally around R800 to R1k is inadequate, then I guess we can see why the LHS are not making out, Personally, I think they are fine. I re-soldered all the relevant joints - vioila, charger performing great, even at its max charge rate. The one that sporadically shut down worked perfectly on the alternate source, indicating that there was a problem between the AC adapter and charger.

I tried the alternate DC source on both (via an adapted PC power supply). Over the weekend I noticed the DC input on the charger when I opened it. Ricoby - thank you, constructive comment. It would appear that the charger stops seeing the battery pack during the charge cycle? It does however sound /indicate normally if a connection is broken during the discharge cycle. Interesting that the connection break does NOT sound if you deliberately break a connection (unplug a charge lead) during the charge cycle. Even when set to charge at 2,000 mA (typically) - after the charge is initiated, the reading will alternate every few seconds between 0.0A and 0.1A for about a minute, then the buzzer sounds and Connection Break is displayed. I have noticed that there is little or no current flow during the charge cycle. It will perform a discharge without any problems. In the case of a Life, the charge leads and the balance leads are always used. I have checked the leads, swopped out the leads, checked the mAh /time cut-offs etc. The other one does the "Connection Break" number that one would normally get if one lead was unplugged. Settings were checked to ensure that it is not timing out, not that this should actually shut it down! I have not been able to catch it, so I have no idea as to how long / how much it had charged /discharged before shutting down. One unit will simply shut down completely, as if it was switched off at the supply. Neither of them are under any form of warranty. The original is still Ok, but the newer ones each have a different problem. After using one of these for some 2 years without any issues, I acquired two more.
